Workshop 1

Workshop 2

This interactive workshop will support participants to explore how attention to business models can strengthen human rights due diligence by companies and financial institutions.

Using the Shift Project Business Model Red Flags resource, the focus will be on moving due diligence beyond issue-by-issue risk identification and mitigation to the effect of commercial strategies and drivers—such as pricing pressure, speed, digitalisation— on human rights impacts and outcomes.

Participants will work through a practical case and use facilitated peer exchange to identify where business models in their own industries' may disproportionately shift costs and risks onto vulnerable groups and how to respond. The goal is that participants feel equipped to bring a business model lens in their work such that they can make their organisations' action to address risks to people- and related business risks, more effective.

About Shift

The workshop will be facilitated by Mark Hodge, Vice President at Shift.

Mark co-led Shift’s VALUING RESPECT PROJECT, focused on developing better ways to evaluate business respect for human rights.

He was previously the Executive Director of the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights (GBI) which he co-founded in 2009. In that role he led the development of GBI’s cross-industry peer learning program that addressed the daily realities and dilemmas of doing business with respect for human rights.

His work also included a project on leverage in corporate lending and project finance for the Dutch Banking Sector Agreement on International Responsible Business Conduct, and the development of a program of work on new digital technologies for the Institute for Human Rights and Business.

Mark has designed and delivered training and capacity building around the world to business leaders, NGO representatives and students, and conducted factory and mine assessments and field visits in several countries with a focus on India, where he was based between 2009 and 2012.

Shift Project is the leading centre of expertise on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), working globally with companies, financial institutions, governments, and standard setters to advance meaningful corporate respect for human rights.

Shift has been closely involved in shaping international frameworks and regulations, including recent EU legislative developments. Key to Shift's work is helping organisations connect human rights due diligence to core business decisions—strategy, business models, and transitions—through practical tools like the Business Model Red Flags, enabling companies to better address systemic risks, reduce inequalities, and support fair outcomes in the digital and climate transitions.

Lansering av 'Remedy Checklist'

The Access to Remedy Hub at Nottingham University Business School is an knowledge exchange hub that aims to support practitioners in understanding how to design and implement effective non-state-based access to remedy for workers.

Remedies may include apologies, restitution, rehabilitation, financial or non-financial compensation, punitive sanctions, injunctions, guarantees of non-repetition.

The first step for businesses to provide access to remedy is through grievance mechanisms, which are a means through which workers can raise concerns about actual or potential negative impacts caused by business activities.
